Measurements explained: snapshots, active and Quote-Safe
The mental model behind roof measurements: where numbers come from, what a snapshot is, why only one is active, and how measurements reach a quote without silently changing it.
Video tutorial coming soon
The written steps below are complete. Producing the video? Use the video script tab — it follows these steps one for one.
A roofing quote is mostly arithmetic on a handful of numbers: total area, pitch, waste, ridge, hip, valley, eave and rake lengths. My Roof CRM stores those numbers per job as measurement snapshots and lets product formulas turn them into quantities.
Numbers come from three places: importing an EagleView or RoofScope PDF, drawing the roof yourself on the aerial map, or ordering a RoofScope report straight from the job. Each route produces a snapshot. A job can keep several snapshots, but exactly one is Active, and only the active one feeds quotes.
Changing the active snapshot never rewrites a quote behind your back. The quote editor shows a "measurements changed" card and you review and apply the new quantities yourself, line by line.
By the end you can
- Explain the three ways measurements get onto a job
- Define snapshot, active and Quote-Safe
- Describe how a changed snapshot reaches the quote (and what it never does)

Step by step
Find measurements on the job
/projects/[projectId]Open a job and look at the "Roof measurements" card on the right.
You should see: Either "No measurements yet…" with "Import EagleView / RoofScope" and "Measure manually", or a summary of Pitch, Roof area, Squares, Ridges, Hips, Valleys, Eaves, Rakes and Waste from the active snapshot.
Understand snapshots
/projects/[projectId]/settingsClick "Measure manually" (or the "Measurements" header button). In the workspace, open the Snapshots tab in the "Measurement details" sidebar.
You should see: Each snapshot shows "Snapshot vN", Active or not, Finalized or Draft, "Updated …" and "Saved by …". Finalized snapshots that are not active have an "Activate" button.
Understand Quote-Safe
/projects/[projectId]/settingsLook at the confidence badge in the top bar: "Draft", "Needs Review" or "Quote-Safe".
You should see: Finalize is disabled until the drawing is Quote-Safe: at least one valid facet, a pitch between 0 and 24, a scale above zero, every edge classified, and no overlapping facets.
Understand how quotes react
/projects/[projectId]Remember this rule: when the active snapshot changes, proposals on the job show "Measurements changed. Refresh quote lines before sharing." and the quote editor offers "Review changes". Nothing changes until you click Apply.
You should see: Sharing a proposal is blocked while the warning is present.
Tips
- Imported reports are activated automatically; manual drawings must be finalized and then activated by hand.
Questions people ask
- Do I need measurements to send a proposal?
- No. Lump-sum quotes and items without formulas work without any measurements. Measurements matter when products have quantity formulas.
